Jan Škach received academic title Ph.D.
News: At the beginning of March Jan Škach defended his dissertation thesis titled "Change And Fault Detection In Dynamic Systems" and received the academic title "doctor of philosophy". The disseration thesis is mainly focused on active fault detection that recently attains increasing attention. At the same time the thesis deals with change detection without knowledge of system model. Jan Škach has been with IDM research group since 2010 and during his 4,5 years Ph.D. studies under supervision of prof. Šimandl and doc. Straka, he has published papers in respected international conferences and respected journals including IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics. Since July 2017 he has been developing automatic transmission for trucks and heavy vehicles with an international automotive company ZF.

Visit from Aalto University
News: IDM Research Group hosts two Ph.D. students from Aalto University in Finland from the reseach group of Simo Särkka (https://users.aalto.fi/~ssarkka/) for two weeks. A purpose of the research stay is to collaborate in field of nonlinear filtering, specifically the use of Student's t-processes quadrature in σ-point filtering. Both students also gave presentations about their research interests: Filip Tronarp with the topic "Some remarks on Stundet's t filters" and Toni Karvonen with the topic "Second order Poincaré inequalities for non-linear Kalman filter."

Journal of Advances in Information Fusion (JAIF) Special issue
News: The special issue is focused on the design of local, i.e., nonlinear Kalman-filter-based, derivative-free filters for nonlinear stochastic dynamic time-varying systems with an emphasis on the theoretical advances in the field of study. In particular, the focus of the issue is laid on both the design of novel algorithms for state and parameter estimation and the in-depth analysis and further development of existing methods. The special issue consists of six papers all from renowned research groups systematically working in the area of the state estimation. Some of the papers are significantly extended versions of the papers presented at the 17th International Conference on Information Fusion (FUSION 2014) within the special session “Advanced Sigma-Point Filters: Analysis, Sigma-Point Set Design, and Applications”. Looking back the visit of the Air Force Research Laboratory
News: Under the program Window on Science (WoS), O. Straka and J. Duník presented two lectures that summarized the latest results of their research in the area of the state estimation of nonlinear systems with uncertainty. The lectures were held at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in Rome, NY. The laboratory employs about 10,000 military and civilian personnel. It manages a scientific and technological program worth several billion dollars anually, which covers the fundamental research, applied research, and development of advanced technologies. The visit was ended with an intensive discussion of further long-term cooperation in the area of tracking moving objects. More information in Czech language can be found on http://info.zcu.cz.

European Workshop ACD 2015
News: European Workshop on Advanced Control Diagnosis (ACD 2015) organized by the IDM Research Group was held on November 19th-20th, 2015. There were 4 plenary lectures given by the prominent experts in the field of automatic control and detection. During the two days, 50 papers of authors from all around the world were presented. The next ACD workshop will be held on November 2016 in Lille, France.

News: The IDM research group organizes the 12th European Workshop on Advanced Control and Diagnosis (ACD 2015) that will take place at the European Centre of Excellence - NTIS, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of West Bohemia (UWB), Pilsen, Czech Republic, on November 19-20, 2015.
The theme of ACD 2015 is Advances in Automatic Control, Fault Detection, and Signal Processing. All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed and all the accepted papers will be published in the IOP Journal of Physics: Conference Series.

Congratulations, doc. Straka!
News: Congratulations to the Head of the Research Group, Ondřej Straka, who received the highest academic qualification for a scholar (doc.) on June 1st, 2015.
Ondřej Straka received his Ph.D. degree in cybernetics from the University of West Bohemia, Czech Republic in 2004. Since 2003 he has been with the Department of Cybernetics, University of West Bohemia, where he has worked as a researcher in several academic projects in the areas of particle filtering, sigma-point filtering, constrained estimation and signal processing. At the department he is engaged in teaching in the area of identification, state estimation and control theory. His current research interests include sigma-point filters, adaptive techniques for sample size setting and sampling density design in particle filtering, Gaussian mixture methods, constrained estimation, and software package for nonlinear state estimation. He is author or co-author of 55 publications dealing with nonlinear state estimation.

Werner von Siemens Excellence Award 2015
News: The team of young researchers from the Department of Cybernetics, Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of West Bohemia was awarded for the most significant result of a basic research - one of the most respected Werner von Siemens awards.
In 2015 a committee of experts evaluated 109 Master's and Ph.D. Thesis and awarded talented students, promising young researchers and university lecturers from technical and science universities and academic institution from the Czech Republic. In the category The Most Significant Result of a Basic Research was awarded the research team prof. Miroslav Šimandl, Jindřich Duník, Ivo Punčochář, and Ondřej Straka for the research of Novel Approaches and Methods of Nonlinear State Estimation and Optimal Decision under Uncertainty. The ceremonial was held in Bethlehem Chapel in Prague on February 5th, 2015.

Jan Škach receives Fulbright-Masaryk scholarship
News: Ph.D. student Jan Škach was awarded by a competitive Fulbright-Masaryk scholarship. Under a supervision of Prof. Frank L. Lewis from the University of Texas at Arlington (http://www.uta.edu/utari/acs/), he will research approximation methods with application to the area of active fault detection.
